2-Night Nyepi Retreat in Bali

Fivelements Retreats Bali Nyepi - Destination Deluxe

Experience the special Nyepi Holiday (during Day of Silence) at Fivelements, Bali

Fivelements, Bali is holding its yearly silent retreat during Nyepi, the Balinese New Year and “Day of Silence”. Representing a new beginning, the period during Nyepi involves purification and reconciliation with God, nature, and our loved ones. However, at the center of Nyepi stands our relationship with ourselves. By facing our inner challenges, we are able to gain more clarity, peace and positivity for a new start.

During the upcoming Nyepi Holiday, when Bali falls completely silent, Fivelements encourages its retreat-goers to take time for themselves and journey within to reach a deeply relaxed state.

Nyepi, part of the Saka calendar, has been celebrated from as far back as AD79. The name Nyepi comes from sepi or ‘silent’ in Balinese, and falls on March 7 this year. The purpose of Nyepi is to pray for the human world and the universe to be purified, and to discard any negativity and start the New Year with positivity and enthusiasm for the future.

The Melasti Ritual of purification of statues takes place three days before Nyepi, where gamelan orchestras accompany processions walking them to the ocean or nearest river for a cleanse.

The most eagerly awaited ceremony is the night before Nyepi, where the Balinese communities have parades and burn the ogoh-ogoh (demons created out of bamboo and papier-mâché), accompanied by music, gong playing, and fireworks to symbolically rid the island of evil spirits and purify the world entering the New Year. This is the equivalent of the Western New Year’s Eve, and is a noisy and extravagant carnival. It is the ultimate contrast to Nyepi, which is completely silent.

The day following Nyepi, families visit each other and offer forgiveness for past deeds, while by contrast the days before Nyepi are filled with music, noise and processions.
